10 practical tips to make your Control of Work project succeed

If you want to update your Control of Work (CoW) system, either paper or electronic, you need to establish what is required and communicate this throughout your senior management team. Whilst the following may sound like obvious questions, they are often overlooked. We have yet to know a CoW project to consider all of these in over 20 years.

Are you considering changing your Control of Work system?

If you are, I’m sure you’ve gone through the various important considerations that must be made to come to that decision. Is this the right time to change? Is there enough buy in to change your current system? What issues have you faced with the system you currently have in place?

So you’ve decided that yes, you definitely want to look at what’s out there and find a solution that is right for you. There are a number of questions that you need to consider going forward; although some may sound obvious this doesn’t stop them being overlooked. An example of some of the questions you might want to be asking are:

  • What is it that needs to be achieved, and what does success look like? Do you have clearly articulated KPIs and measures of success?
  • Who will sponsor the project, own it, take the credit for its success and be accountable or stepping in if required to ensure it doesn’t fail?
  • This is a Management of Change project, why change now?
  • There needs to be a budget, do you have a clear idea of what the whole project will cost?
  • Is there a cost/benefit analysis? If not, how will you measure value?
  • Is there a project risk register? If not, how will you manage the risks?
  • What are the people issues to be addressed and how will you get people to buy into the project?
  • How long will the project take and what phases will it be split into?
  • What are the key features of the system/project that must be included in a specification of requirements?
  • Once the new system is in place, how will you manage it and for how long?
