After 35 years in business, 25 of those providing e-learning, we still hear reasons as to why e-learning isn’t a suitable option for delivering health and safety training.
With advances in technology over the past few years, the opportunities and possibilities are endless for electronic training methods and companies that makes the move will reap the benefits. Below we’ve detailed some of the most common objections that we’ve encountered.
They have no computers within the organisation or they can’t train staff within working hours.
We thought we’d start with an odd one – no computers. How, you might ask, can an organisation have no computers available in 2018? We wondered the same thing, but this is a genuine objection that we’ve come across when speaking to businesses about online learning.
One of the main advantages of e-learning is that it can be undertaken anywhere, anytime and is usually much shorter than classroom-based learning, and with advances in technology e-learning can be undertaken on a tablet while sitting in a café or even while travelling on a train or a plane with wifi.
The ability to complete the training anywhere allows the delegate the opportunity to undertake the course in an environment where they feel comfortable, and the short length of the courses means that delegates do not need to take a lot of time out of their working day to complete their training and gain their certification there and then.
Members of staff “cannot read” from or engage with computers.
Yes, we’ve genuinely had people tell us that their workforce could not read from a computer screen.
The oil and gas industry, in particular, has a diverse workforce with ranging technological abilities. As such, many businesses dismiss using online training as they assume that more mature members of staff may be unable to use the system. We disagree with this sentiment.
We have designed our software products to be user-friendly and intuitive, and inclusive of the entire workforce, ensuring that they do not feel alienated when using our products.
Once delegates have entered the training course, they have the option to either read or listen to the course material. Using clear and interesting voice-over artists, each of our courses has been designed to be visually-led and engaging, with the informative voiceover in the background. Delegates have the option to read or re-listen to any screens where they don’t feel that they have grasped the information thoroughly. It may not always be possible, in a time-constrained classroom course, for the delegate to ask for further information.
We find that this method is much more engaging and often provides more effective learning and knowledge retention, than classroom courses.
“We’re not high-hazard enough to require e-learning courses on every topic.”
This one is interesting, because while we understand that there are different levels of hazards across various industries working at height, for example, is working at height. Whether it is on a platform in the North Sea or on a construction site, the concept is the same even if the level of danger might be slightly different.

We wholeheartedly believe in creating a safety culture across the business, and this comes from effective awareness training of core health and safety topics. Irrespective of how hazardous a work environment, whether it’s an oil and gas platform or a factory floor, it’s essential that staff understand how to make the business safer.
Ultimately, investing in staff training creates consistency across your business and speaks volumes to the type of business you want to be. Investing in safety training speaks to how you see your staff and their value.

“We have no appetite for e-learning.”
If this is indeed the case then okay, we can supply classroom training, or we just aren’t the right supplier for that business, but the interesting part about e-learning is that it is backed up by a lot of research.
- Delegates undertaking e-learning are likely to have anywhere between 25%, and 60% better retention rates opposed to traditional classroom training. Classroom training has on average 8% – 10% retention rates.
- e-learning requires, on average, 40-60% less employee time than learning through the traditional classroom methods.
- e-learning costs a fraction of the price of sending employees to classroom courses, which normally have some “unconsidered” costs such as travel, accommodation, expenses. This leads right along nicely to…

Developing high-quality e-learning can be a costly investment, but it is a smart investment.
Scrimping here can leave you with poor quality e-learning and generally you’ll find that by using companies who offer cheap solutions you will be getting a sub-standard quality product by designers who are not experts in effective learning solutions.
What’s the age-old adage? – “Buy cheap, buy twice”.
When considering e-learning it is important to remember that although there is an initial development cost, and potentially some annual hosting fees, that the amounts saved in efficiency begin to put these costs into perspective.
Classroom training has a lot of hidden costs:
- You pay for the course itself
- Transportation and accommodation for the delegate
- Potentially an increased day rate for working away from home
- Additional expenses such as food and drinks
e-learning is short and generally inexpensive per use. If you consider the amount your business spends on the costs associated with classroom training each year, not just including the course fee themselves, we’re sure that you’ll begin to see the benefit of investment of e-learning.
These are just a sample of the objections that we have received from businesses who were apprehensive about changing their training methods.

Ultimately though, we know that not all e-learning is high-quality. If e-learning is poor-quality delegates are unlikely to learn efficiently or retain knowledge, whereas well-built, structured e-learning has the power to create a knowledgeable and safe workforce.
