Cresent, Control of Work and Health and Safety specialists, celebrate 35 years in business - what a journey it has been.
Founded in 1982, and led by Jim Land, Cresent has worked across a range of hazardous industries, in all four corners of the world. Over the last 35 years Cresent has celebrated many milestones and has positioned itself at the forefront of innovation. In 1993 Cresent saw an opportunity to provide computer-based training (CBT) to the oil and gas industry and became the first training provider to open an e-learning training centre.
35 Summer Street in Aberdeen became Cresent’s home for many years and has seen so many 1000s of delegates pass through its doors that, to this day, if you get in a taxi in Aberdeen and mention Cresent they will often say “Oh, Cresent on Summer Street?”.
Jim Land (CEO) credits Cresent’s evolution to its innovative approach to Health and Safety, Control of Work and Training. Not only did Cresent open the first oil and gas e-learning centre (1993) but was also the first to develop an integrated Safe System of Work in the oil and gas industry (1994). Following this came the development of an in-house online Learning Management System (2001) and the successful completion of its largest project, Cresent’s electronic Control of Work (CoW) system – WorkSafe® (2009).
One of the most important milestones in Cresent’s history was the contract to design, programme and deploy this system across 26 facilities from a central server at the Rumaila oilfield in Iraq. Cresent has never been afraid to push the boundaries in order to drive progress in safety.
In 2012 Cresent moved home; transferring its head office and training centre to Arnhall Business Park in Westhill to be closer to the many clients who had also relocated there. The new Cresent House has seen an exciting and busy first 5 years with key milestones including;
- A major Safe System of Work (SSoW) contract being won with a specialist manufacturer of enriched uranium, URENCO UK Limited (UUK).
- Winning a second WorkSafe® Control of Work system deployment in Iraq for the West Qurna II oilfield, making Cresent the most influential provider of Control of Work systems and HSE training programmes in Iraq. Being able to provide all of the systems, documents and training in English and Arabic is a key success factor for Cresent in Iraq.
- Winning a major WorkSafe® Control of Work and training contract for TechnipFMC’s sites and global fleet of vessels.
Specialist Control of Work knowledge, coupled with a commitment to customer satisfaction, has strategically positioned Cresent to support a range of industries and gain a deep understanding of the specific needs and requirements that apply to those industies.
Cresent has a loyal customer list based on long-term relationships; indeed our CEO Jim Land continues to train the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) 15 years after he delivered the first session. Cresent has worked across the globe, in five continents and in over 40 countries.
Cresent is passionate about Health and Safety, which is evident within the first few minutes of speaking with any of the team. This appetite has been fostered by Jim Land, who has built a business truly dedicated to making potentially hazardous working environments safer.
So, what makes Cresent’s CEO most proud when he reflects back over the past 35 years?
The answer is simply: - “the people - business is about people at the end of the day, isn’t it? I am incredibly proud of the team we have built at Cresent, who regularly go above and beyond what would reasonably be expected in order to meet a customer’s requirements, while also ensuring that safety is at the core of everything we do”.
Cresent has come a long way in the last 35 years, and with many exciting plans currently in the pipeline the team is committed to ensuring continued success as we go forward for the future.
